The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATTON to
USS HAWKBILL (SSN 666)
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
For meritorious service while conducting operations as a ship in the Pacific Submarine Force from 1 March 1998 to 31 May 1999. USS HAWKBILL (SSN 666) skillfully conducted two Arctic Ocean Scientific Expeditions, flawlessly accomplishing all objectives. Throughout these extraordinary demanding operations, HAWKBILL displayed exceptional shiphandling skill, tenacity, and perseverance in accomplishing its assigned duties under extremely challenging conditions in the demanding Arctic environment. Demonstrating an unprecedented partnership between the Navy and the Nation's scientific community, HAWKBILL has helped to decipher the mysteries of global warming and its implications for mankind. The successful execution of all assigned tasking attests to the initiative, professional competence, and dedicated efforts of each crewmember.
Additionally, HAWKBILL conducted a VIP underway for twelve dignitaries and several media embarks from a remote Arctic Ice Camp, significantly raising public awareness of the unique capabilities of the submarine force. By their professional expertise, highly effective teamwork, and unfailing devotion to duty, the officers and enlsted personnell of USS HAWKEILL (SSN 666) reflected credit upon themselves and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
